Jonathan Saraga: Young & Rising Jazz Trumpet Player

One of today’s rising trumpet players is Jonathan Saraga. Jonathan was destined to become a great trumpeter from an early age. He was raised by parents who enjoyed exposing their young son to an eclectic mix of musical styles. His mother was an amateur singer and painter, who regularly played music in the home, including the sounds of Motown, jazz, swing, and rock and roll from the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s. Jonathan’s appreciation of the various styles of music would later help mold his own unique style.

From the time Jonathan picked up his first trumpet at age 11, his middle school band director saw that he had a natural gift for playing the trumpet and encouraged him to challenge himself. It was in high school that Jonathan’s love of the jazz trumpet blossomed into a disciplined passion. He started developing his own vocal voice using a fresh approach to traditional jazz styles. During his years at LaGuardia High School of Music and Art and the Performing Arts, he continually honed his mastery of the trumpet and won acclaim at many state-wide and country-wide competitions.

After high school, he went on to SUNY Purchase where he studied 6 years, acquiring both a Bachelor and Master’s degree in Music, specializing in jazz. Jonathan has since performed with many of the best trumpet players in the world and recently released his debut album, called “First Vision” in 2012. This album has already garnered critical acclaim, with critics comparing it to the music of trumpet greats Miles Davis, Dave Douglas, Phil Driscoll, and John Zorn.

The next time you are in the mood for some jazz, listen to the work of Jonathan Saraga, and you will see why he is considered one of America’s best rising trumpet players today.
